"Statement on the results of the Japanese

House of Representatives election"

In the Japanese House of Representatives election on October 22, 2017, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe won 312 seats, securing two-thirds seats (310 seats) of the constitutional initiative. Therefore, the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK, Rev. Kim Young-joo) immediately issued a statement and urged the Japanese government to:
  1. Recognize war responsibility for World War II and urge genuine apology and compensation for war crimes by Japanese military comfort women.
  2. Any attempt to revise Article 9 of the Constitution prohibiting Japanese war actions must be stopped immediately.
  3. We must stop the attempt to strengthen the military dominance of Japan by raising the military tensions of Northeast Asia through the use of North Korea's nuclear arsenal.

In addition, in order to prevent the Abe regime's amendment of Article 9 of the Constitution (such as national referendum), Japan will cooperate with world religions to hold the "9th International Religious Society of the Japanese Constitution" in Hiroshima, Japan, from June 13-15.

The following is a full text of the statement.

Statement on The Results of the Japanese House of Representatives

Election

The Korean National Council of Churches (NCCK) expresses serious concern that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the ruling coalition party of the Joint Political Party won 312 seats, more than two-thirds of the total seats, as a result of the Japanese House of Representatives election held on October 22. We will disclose our position as shown below.

The Liberal Democratic Party and the People 's Party have sought to make Japan a war - torn country again, against Article 9 of the Japanese Peace Constitution which stipulates the abandonment of war. As the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, sets the stage for a long-term ruling through this election, it's only a matter of time until actions are taken for the revision of Article 9 of the Peace Constitution and it is clear that the peace of Asia would be greatly threatened. Asian neighbors, including Korea, are reminded of the fear and suffering of the war that occurred over 70 years ago in front of the Abe government's ambitions of military chrysanthemum. Additionally, the Abe government is showing the ambition of Japan's military supremacy with the nuclear weapons of the North. This threatens peace and security in the Northeast Asian region and warns that it is a dangerous move to bring the region back into the vortex of war.

For this reason, we call on the Government of Japan for the following peace in Northeast Asia and the world.
  1. Recognize war responsibility for the Pacific War and urge genuine apology and compensation for war crimes by Japanese military comfort women.
  2. Urge Japan to immediately suspend any attempt to revise Article 9 of the Peace Constitution, which prohibits war activities.
  3. Discourage North Korea to use its nuclear arsenal to increase military tensions in Northeast Asia and to stop attempts to strengthen Japan's military supremacy.

We will cooperate and act with churches, governments and civil society around the world so that Japan can play a leading role in achieving world peace beyond Northeast Asia by keeping Article 9 of the Peace Constitution.
